CentraLUG: Ed Lawson presents Scribus, 7 PM June 6th, NHTI

The monthly meeting of CentraLUG, the Concord/Central New Hampshire chapter of the Greater New Hampshire Linux Users Group, occurs on the first Monday of each month on the New Hampshire Technical Institute Campus starting at 7 PM. (Note that we’re likely to reschedule the July meeting as it falls on the Fourth.)

This month, we’ll be meeting in Room 146 of the Library/Learning Center/Bookstore, http://www.nhti.net/nhtimap.pdf, marked as “I” on that map. Directions and maps are available on the NHTI site at http://www.nhti.edu. The main meeting starts at 7 PM, with Ed Lawson presenting Scribus, an open desktop publishing system. Open to the public. Free admission. Tell your friends.

Scribus is available from http://www.scribus.org.uk and is not just another pretentious word processor, but an entire pre-press system for producing high-quality documents suitable for publication. It will generate PDF files. It has a new “Scriptor” API for scripting in Python. Imports and exports SVG. Bells! Whistles! It runs natively under Linux and under X11 on Mac OS X and (in theory, anyway) CygWin on Windows. Scribus is distributed under the GPL.

CentraLUG Monthly Meeting Announcement

The Central New Hampshire Linux User Group (CentraLUG) holds free meetings that educate computer hobbyists and professionals alike about Linux, Open Source Software and Linux-related technologies. The monthly meeting will be held on April 4th at the New Hampshire Technical Institute Library in Concord, room 146 from 7 pm to 9 pm. Meetings are open to the public. This month, Bill Sconce will debrief his trip to Washington DC and report on Python Conference happenings and prognostications: new projects, show-and-tell, an outlook for Python 3.0, one difference between Python and Perl and more! Ed Lawson will present Scribus, an Open Source desktop publishing system. An open question and answer session will be held — bring your Linux questions!

CentraLUG meeting, March 7th: Webrick, LinuxWorld wrap-up

David Berube, our fearless leader, posts: Monday, March 7th – Webrick and Linux World. CentraLUG is having another great meeting on Monday March 7th, and this time, we’ll be covering Webrick, a powerful system for easily creating custom webservers in Ruby. With Webrick, it’s easy to drop a full webserver into any application. We’ll also have a brief recap of LinuxWorld. Per usual, there will be copius amounts of free caffeine.

It’s at the NHTI. You can get directions on the NHTI site: http://www.nhti.net/frames_Map.html. It’s in the Library/Learning Center/Bookstore, marked as “I” on that map. The room is 146, and it starts at 7:00.

Learn something new every day…

Ed Lawson did a great presentation on CUPS, the Common UNIX Printing System, last night at CentraLUG. Christopher Schmidt did a great job of taking meeting notes when he wasn’t showing us how he programs his cell phone in Python via Bluetooth from his PowerBook. Really. Cool.

The Python SIG also held a session in the hour before the main meeting, and we’ve tentatively agreed on the 3rd Wednesday of the month as the time for the SIG to get together. Location still TBD – we may use the NHTI in Concord, but are also looking at Manchester as a more central location.

Thursday night the Peterborough LUG, also known as MonadLUG, will be holding its first session in a while, coming back from a period of somnolence thanks to their new coordinator, Guy Pardoe. Looking forward to the meeting!

Winter Solstice is a favorite day, even though it is the shortest day of the year.

Woke up at 1:30 this morning and knew I was gettting better. Couldn’t get back to sleep until after 3. No problem. I’m a happy guy.

Check out http://www.blogcritics.org. Interesting reviews, commentary and just general stuff. Wasted an hour browsing the site, enjoyed every minute.

Intertrust Technologies is giving Microsoft a hard time on their ownership of key Digital Restriction Management patents, according to this story. Think Microsoft will just buy them?
